Abstract The main purpose of this article is to investigate the evolution of China, Brazil and India participation in the pharmaceutical global value chains and how the development of their respective pharmaceutical industries impacted their positioning during the Covid-19 pandemic. The object of this research will be the State policies implemented in order to develop the pharmaceutical sector in the countries analyzed, as well as the impacts on its international insertion between 1980 and 2022. The article adopts the analytical framework of global value chains, which explains the division of production processes across different States and the concentration of production of intangible assets with high added value (such as technology and intellectual property) in important nodes (countries) of a given chain. In this sense, we propose the following research questions: how does the insertion of China, India and Brazil occur in global value chains in this sector? Which nodes did they manage to occupy? Answering these questions allows us to assess whether the international insertion of these countries took place in a subordinate manner or with a greater degree of autonomy and governance in the pharmaceutical chains. Finally, an analysis will be carried out of how the development of the pharmaceutical industry in the selected countries impacted their position in relation to the global pharmaceutical industry

Resumo O presente artigo tem como objetivo principal analisar a evolução da participação de China, Índia e Brasil nas cadeias globais de fármacos e como o desenvolvimento de suas respectivas indústrias farmacêuticas impactou seu posicionamento durante a pandemia de Covid-19. O objeto desta pesquisa serão as políticas de Estado executadas de modo a desenvolver o setor de fármacos nos países analisados, bem como os impactos para a sua inserção internacional entre 1980 e 2022. O artigo adota o instrumental de análise das cadeias globais de valor, que explicita a divisão dos processos produtivos através de diferentes Estados e a concentração da produção de ativos intangíveis de alto valor agregado (como tecnologia e propriedade intelectual) em nódulos (países) importantes de determinada cadeia. Neste sentido, propomos como perguntas de pesquisa: como ocorre a inserção de China, Índia e Brasil nas cadeias globais de valor neste setor? Quais os nódulos que conseguiram ocupar? A resposta destas perguntas possibilita-nos avaliar se a inserção internacional desses países se deu de forma subordinada ou com maior grau de autonomia e governança nas cadeias de fármacos. Por fim, será realizada uma análise de como o desenvolvimento da indústria farmacêutica dos países selecionados impactou seu posicionamento em relação à indústria farmacêutica global.

Abstract The Latin American political field has historically been permeated by male repertoires and practices, and is notable for its low female representation. Precisely for this reason, it is assumed that there are multiple strategies devised by females to enter and be recognised in political power struggles. Here the case of former president Cristina Kirchner is used to evoke ways of legitimizing practices perceived as feminine, in an attempt to enunciate probable processes of reconverting gender into a political resource. Similarly, her trajectory allows us to understand the specific dynamics of first ladyism and political matrimony as strategies for gaining and securing the legitimacy of the vote. The intention is to generate studies on a typology of female politicians, focusing on their practices in and for the political field.

Resumo O campo político latino-americano é historicamente permeado por repertórios e práticas masculinas e notabilizado pela baixa representação feminina. Justamente por isso, parte-se do pressuposto de que há múltiplas estratégias engendradas por mulheres visando a sua entrada e a seu reconhecimento nas disputas de poder político. Aqui se toma o caso da ex-presidenta argentina Cristina Kirchner para evocar formas de legitimação de práticas destacadas como femininas, buscando enunciar prováveis processos de reconversão do gênero em recurso político. Do mesmo modo, sua trajetória permite entender as dinâmicas específicas do primeiro-damismo e do matrimônio político como estratégias para angariar e assegurar a legitimidade do voto. Intenciona-se gerar estudos acerca de uma tipologia de políticas (mulheres) tendo como foco suas práticas no e para o campo político.

Abstract By analyzing PNAD-C microdata (2012-2022), this article investigates educational opportunities and access to work among young people. The net enrollment rate in secondary education increased among young people aged 15 to 17 years, but a transition model indicates that racial inequalities in access to secondary education grew between 2017 and 2022, while the mother’s education conditions the basic education at proper age. Furthermore, the role of the young student was consolidated among adolescents aged 15 to 17 years, but for the group aged 18 to 24 years, exclusion from studies and work prevails among young black and female students. Finally, living with children is decisive for access to opportunities among poor women.

Resumo Ao analisar os microdados da PNAD-C (2012-2022), este artigo investiga as oportunidades educacionais e de acesso ao trabalho entre os jovens. A taxa líquida de matrícula no ensino médio avançou entre os jovens com 15 a 17 anos, mas um modelo de transições indica que as desigualdades raciais no acesso ao ensino médio aumentaram entre 2017 e 2022, enquanto a escolaridade da mãe condiciona a formação básica na idade adequada. Ademais, o papel do jovem-estudante se consolidou entre os adolescentes com 15 a 17 anos, mas, para o grupo com 18 a 24 anos, a exclusão dos estudos e do trabalho prevalece entre os jovens negros e do sexo feminino. Por fim, a residência com crianças é decisiva para o acesso a oportunidades entre as mulheres pobres.

Abstract The article seeks to understand the social conditions for the creation of the French Sociological Association (AFS) in 2002. At first, a historical reconstitution of French sociological associations prior to the AFS is made. Then, the context that preceded the creation of the AFS is analyzed, observing the discredit of sociology and its institutional fragility based on an exemplary case: the controversy caused by the defense of the thesis of astrologer Elizabeth Teissier. Finally, we analyze the various motivations of those involved in the creation of AFS and some changes that occurred over its twenty years until it became an association with a strong presence of young researchers.

Resumo O artigo busca compreender as condicionantes para a criação da Associação Francesa de Sociologia (AFS) em 2002. Em um primeiro momento faz-se uma reconstituição histórica das agremiações sociológicas francesas anteriores à AFS. Em seguida, analisa-se o contexto que antecedeu a criação da AFS, observando o desprestígio da sociologia e sua fragilidade institucional a partir de um caso exemplar: a polêmica causada pela defesa de tese da astróloga Elizabeth Teissier. Por fim, analisam-se as diversas motivações dos envolvidos com a criação da AFS e algumas mudanças ocorridas ao longo dos seus vinte anos até tornar-se uma associação com forte presença de jovens pesquisadores.

Abstract In Brazil, especially after the health crisis, we have witnessed the expansion of care platform companies. From this process, a question emerged: what were the possible effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on the digitization of labor intermediation in the care sector? Through the analysis of workers’ experiences in three platforms, encompassing direct and indirect care, we sought to understand how the pandemic, intertwined with the governance of these companies, affected care work practices. To confront the lack of disaggregated data, we mapped the care apps and platforms collecting data from the country’s main app store; we analyzed the platforms’ Terms of Service and Conditions of Use, and the company websites; we conducted interviews with workers on these platforms; and we referred to their complaints on the Reclame Aqui website. We conclude that the governance of the platforms affected the workers’ experience in different ways and with varying effects depending on the platform. Among them, we highlighted the dialogue between clients and workers, the exacerbating of control provided by a system of prescriptive and punitive ratings, the conditions of care work, including tasks that go beyond expected activities, leading to an overlap of different forms of care. Having documented the intensification of care work and the capacity of the platforms to go beyond the matching of demanders and providers towards intervening in the way work itself is performed is the contribution of this research to an analysis of the forms taken by the broad and recent process of digitalization of care work in Brazil.

Resumo As empresas-plataforma voltadas ao trabalho de cuidado expandiram-se velozmente nos últimos anos no Brasil, em especial após a recente crise sanitária. Tal expansão trouxe para a ordem do dia o tema deste artigo, a saber, os possíveis efeitos da pandemia de Covid-19 sobre a digitalização da intermediação do trabalho nos cuidados, um segmento para o qual a literatura brasileira sobre plataformização do trabalho tem estado pouco atenta. Para acompanhar o ritmo desse crescimento, várias estratégias foram adotadas diante do desafio da falta de dados desagregados para o setor. Assim, mapeamos os aplicativos e plataformas de cuidado, construindo um banco de aplicativos a partir de dados da principal loja de apps no país; bem assim, analisamos os sites, os Termos de Serviços e Condições de Uso de três plataformas de cuidado direto e indireto. Conduzimos, ainda, entrevistas com trabalhadoras nessas plataformas e analisamos suas denúncias postadas no site Reclame Aqui. Concluímos que a governança das plataformas afetou o cotidiano das trabalhadoras sob diferentes formas e com efeitos variados conforme cada plataforma. Entre eles, destacamos o diálogo com os clientes, o controle via sistema de notas prescritivas e punitivas, a inclusão de tarefas que iam além da atividade contratada, bem como a sobreposição de diferentes formas de cuidado. Ter documentado a intensificação do trabalho de cuidado e a capacidade manifesta pela empresa-plataforma de ir além do mero pareamento entre demandantes e ofertantes, passando a intervir no modo como o próprio trabalho se exerce, é a contribuição desta pesquisa para uma análise das formas assumidas pelo amplo e recente processo de digitalização do trabalho de cuidado no Brasil.

Abstract In 2023, the Institute for Social Research in Frankfurt celebrates its 100th birthday. Since then, the “Frankfurt School” carried out a broad diagnosis of the permanence of capitalism and its contradictions. Until the mid-1960s, however, the English-speaking world was still relatively unaware of the important legacy of this experience. Largely responsible for reversing this situation, is published in 1973 the work Dialectic Imagination: A History of the Frankfurt School and the Institute of Social Research 1923-1950, by Martin Jay. In this conversation with the author, we discuss the history and assumptions of critical theory, its relationship with other currents of thought and, finally, its contemporaneity and relevance for thinking about the peripheral Brazilian situation.

Resumo Em 2023, o Instituto de Pesquisa Social de Frankfurt completa cem anos. Desde então, a “Escola de Frankfurt” realizou um amplo diagnóstico da perenidade do capitalismo e de suas contradições. Até meados dos anos 1960, entretanto, o mundo anglófono ainda estava relativamente alheio ao importante legado dessa experiência. Amplamente responsável pela reversão dessa situação, surge em 1973 a obra A imaginação dialética: História da Escola de Frankfurt e do Instituto de Pesquisas Sociais 1923-1950, de Martin Jay. Nessa conversa com o autor, discorremos sobre a história e os pressupostos da teoria crítica, a relação dela com outras correntes de pensamento e, por fim, sua atualidade e relevância para se pensar a periférica situação brasileira.

Abstract In this article we discuss whether and to what extent the information that circulated on WhatsApp during the 2018 presidential elections could characterize a populist narrative, and its relationship with representative democracy and connective action. Based on an analysis of the content circulated in the messenger’s public groups, we showed that these presented elements that converge both to characterize the populist narrative and the e-campaigns. However, we found an anti-systemic and hateful approach, of an anti-pluralist nature, in which the people are incorporeal and the leader is evoked, especially in the content linked to Bolsonaro, which suggests new nuances of authoritarian populist discourse in contemporary times.

Resumo Neste artigo discutimos se e em que medida as informações que circularam no WhatsApp durante as eleições presidenciais de 2018 poderiam caracterizar uma narrativa populista, e as relações desta com a democracia representativa e a ação conectiva. A partir da análise dos conteúdos veiculados nos grupos públicos do mensageiro, mostramos que estes apresentavam elementos que convergem para a caracterização tanto da narrativa populista, quanto das e-campanhas. Contudo, verificamos uma abordagem antissistêmica e odiosa, de caráter antipluralista, na qual o povo é incorpóreo e o líder é evocado, sobretudo nos conteúdos vinculados a Bolsonaro, o que sugere novas nuances do discurso populista autoritário na contemporaneidade.

Abstract The article aims to comprehend the transformation of the values and premises of action of economic elites engaged with what is stated as social change in Brazil, based on the analysis of the Lemann Foundation’s transnational agency and “social opening” initiatives. Through a comprehensive and positional perspective, our documentary research (2002-2023) demonstrates how values historically characteristic of dominant fractions, such as merit and individualism, have given way to compositions with values such as diversity and responsibility, which is a global phenomenon. The study of the symbolic pillars of elite positions allows us to understand the social denegation involved in the production of elite conviction and the current forms of its sociodicy.

Resumo O artigo busca compreender as atualizações dos valores e premissas da ação de elites econômicas engajadas com o que é enunciado como mudança social no Brasil a partir da análise da atuação transnacional e das iniciativas de “abertura social” da Fundação Lemann. Por meio de uma perspectiva compreensiva e posicional, a pesquisa documental (2002-2023) demonstra como valores historicamente característicos de frações dominantes, como o mérito e o individualismo, têm dado lugar a composições com valores como diversidade e responsabilidade, fenômeno que se declina globalmente. O estudo do lastro simbólico das posições de elite permite compreender a denegação social envolvida na produção da convicção de elite e das formas atuais de sua sociodiceia.

Abstract In this article, we analyze the nets of power that allowed the inscription of the archaeological site Cais do Valongo as a World Heritage Site. Through documents, fieldwork, and specialized literature, we highlight three scenarios: the incorporation of black activists into public administration in the late 1970s, the international legitimacy of Afro-Brazilian agendas by Unesco’s Slave Route project and the increase to the tourism industry during the urban operation Porto Maravilha at the beginning of the 21st century. We argue that the territorialization of the memories of slavery was driven by a business management of cultural identities, in which technical methods and procedures were imposed as a model of political action. In this way, we conclude that the Afro-Brazilian identity discourse was integrated into the new dynamics of capital accumulation and cultural commodification, with the meanings and practices around the wharf aggregating the logic of the duty of memory and competition regulation.

Resumo Neste artigo, analisamos os feixes de poder que possibilitaram a inscrição do sítio arqueológico Cais do Valongo como patrimônio mundial. Através de documentos, trabalho de campo e literatura especializada, destacamos três cenários: a incorporação de ativistas dos movimentos negros à administração pública no final dos anos 1970, a legitimação internacional das agendas afro-brasileiras pelo projeto A Rota do Escravo da Unesco e o incremento à indústria turística durante a operação urbana Porto Maravilha no início do século XXI. Argumentamos que a territorialização das memórias da escravidão foi impulsionada por uma gestão empresarial das identidades culturais, em que métodos e procedimentos técnicos se impuseram como modelo de ação política. Desse modo, concluímos que o discurso da identidade afro-brasileira se integrou às novas dinâmicas de acumulação do capital e de mercantilização cultural, com os sentidos e práticas em torno do cais agregando as lógicas do dever de memória e da regulação concorrencial.
